They say in your first trimester of pregnancy that women don’t need any extra calories. I have to say, at just about 10 weeks pregnant, I am finding this more and more shocking and a bit frustrating. Ever since about my fourth week I noticed a huge increase in my appetite. I had almost two weeks where I felt like I was a bottomless pit. Then I hit the point of nausea and food aversions. Some of my favorite foods literally made me want to run in the other direction and gag. I was still hungry, but what appealed to me and what I felt like I could stomach became a big challenge. Vegetables, which is something I consume daily were one of the worst on my list of aversions. The thought made my stomach turn upside down. I think the sixth and seventh weeks were the worst for this. Once I hit week eight, I was able to start eating salads and had more options that I felt I wanted.
Now, I’m shy of being in my 10th week by one day and the food aversions haven’t gone away completely, but they’re not quite as bad. However, the hunger, is literally constant and once again I feel like a bottomless pit. I told my husband two nights ago that I felt like I had a tapeworm and he said, “Ya! Our baby!” and smiled at me. I was chatting with a friend just last week who said she was the same way and was also shocked that women don’t need any extra calories in the first trimester. Says who?! If I don’t eat then I feel sick. If I wait too long to eat thinking that it’s too soon to eat again, I feel REALLY SICK. So what gives? I can’t wait for my next prenatal appointment so I can ask my OB just how common these hungry horrors are and why on earth I supposedly don’t need any extra calories if I’m so damn hungry all the time. Being this hungry makes me realize why some women gain more than the average expected amount of 25-35 pounds. I’ve already gained more by 10 weeks than I am “supposed to” in the entire first trimester. Luckily a lot of my friends said because I was thin to begin with that it’s common to gain more in the beginning and said this happened to them as well. But my goodness, at this rate, I’ll be the size of a house by February! Right now I feel like the few pounds I’ve gained is sitting in my chest. Holy pregnant boobs! While my jeans and pants are definitely getting snug, I don’t have much of a baby bump yet. If anything, I just look a bit bloated (according to my husband and friends.) At least now healthier foods are appealing to me so when I eat, I’m trying to eat things like fruit and veggies, but let’s be honest, I’m pregnant, I have and will splurge on occasion.
So, until next time, I’m off to go eat yet another snack!
