For the past year I’ve been describing myself as having “Exercise ADD.” I LOVE working out, but I seriously get border than bored going to a regular gym working out in same place every day. I need and love to switch up my routine on a daily basis. For 15 months straight I worked out with a personal trainer once or twice a week, but I found the only days I was actually going to the gym were the days I had a session with her. I was still exercising 5-6 days a week, but all of my other workouts consisted of runs, bike rides, or yoga followed by strength training on my own – without machines, without the gym.
I’ve never been a big fan of the machines at the gym and the only time I really used them was when my trainer incorporated them into my session. I’ve always been a firm believer that our body is an incredible tool all on its own to get fit and in shape. I’d much rather go for a run outside, lift some dumbbells, or bang out some pushups and crunches than hang out in a gym on the machines. In fact, I don’t think the machines are as effective as the many different exercises you can do with a medicine ball, weights, or a TRX band.
A friend of mine told me about a strength and conditioning center called SLS Fitness a while back and urged me to try it on several occasions. Last week, after being so beyond sick of my current gym, I finally decided to check out a class and I must say I don’t know what took me so long to get myself there! Everything about the center is exactly what I’m looking for. The owner, Sherri, opened the center with the intentions of offering something unique and focuses on creating muscle confusion by changing your workout and routine daily. The first time I visited the website I read in the “About Us” section, “There need be no machines…just a willingness to work hard.” I couldn’t agree more! That quote alone had me sold on the concept and design of the center. At SLS you never workout alone and you always have a trainer. The center offers various different classes ranging from Metabolic Effect, Advanced Circuit Training, Spinning, TRX, and many more. Each class is 30 minutes long and packed with an intense variety of effective exercises. They also offer classes for beginners and people who are trying to get back into shape. After trying several different classes I decided SLS Fitness is definitely the place for me. I took Advanced Circuit training this past week which immediately left me feeling addicted to the challenge, energetic and strong. I think my three favorite circuits were sprinting with a sled wrapped around my waist that had a 35lb plate weight on it, plyometric jumps, and “real” pushups on the bosu ball. The trainer got the idea for this particular class from an elite baseball training and told us it was designed for athletes who wanted to get their ass kicked! And that it did!
SLS focuses on “holistic fitness” and “longevity.” I encourage and urge all of my friends, acquaintances, and readers who live in or around the north of Boston area to check out SLS Fitness. I couldn’t agree more with their approach. I’m beyond excited to be an official member and make this a key part of my weekly workout routine! Exercise ADD Cured!
Stay healthy, stay strong, and keep moving!
