It seems the majority of people living in a colder climate tend to cringe at the turn of fall because it brings colder weather with winter to follow. But for me, fall is my favorite. I love everything about it, including the anticipation of the holidays, winter and snow. It’s a time of year when I feel most creative, playful and truly like a kid again. So I thought I’d share some innovative ideas to help everyone have fun in fall.
Play with Pumpkins: Picking the perfect pumpkins and carving one or two just before or on Halloween is by far one of my favorite fall activities. From deciding on what face to choose, enjoying the glimmering glow of a jack-o-lantern to toasting pumpkin seeds, I simply love everything about it. My family and I were recently invited to a friends house for “Canadian Thanksgiving” where there was an abundance of small children running around. My friend Robbie had one of the coolest activities for the kids that got me asking, “Are you on Pinterest?! This is brilliant!” He painted a bunch of pumpkins with chalkboard paint and got some chalk. All the kids were able to decorate their pumpkins without making a huge mess, take them home without worrying about paint needing to dry or getting everywhere and they can continue to make different faces or drawings simply by erasing and starting over again. Brilliant – right?! I’m sticking this amazing idea in my back pocket for when my daughter gets older because it’ll be quite a few years before I allow her to manipulate any sharp objects for carving!
Get Clever with Colorful Leaves: I’m not typically a big fan of yard work, but for some reason I enjoy raking. Somehow I find it liberating. I love being outside with the colors, the smell of fall in the air and the added bonus of getting in an outdoor workout. I’ve taken advantage of a few nap times in the last couple of weeks and done some raking in our yard. Not only did I score a bunch of extra steps on my Fitbit, but I got a bit creative too. I think the picture says it all, and we did a bunch of family shots that I’m really excited about, but this one is my favorite one of just my daughter. This idea has only got me thinking of ingenious ideas in the snow this upcoming winter!
Step Outside: As a native New Enlgander, I truly love all the seasons. But another reason why I love fall is for its rich lush colors. I’m lucky enough to have hiking and mountain biking trails right behind my house, and I take advantage of them weekly by going for hikes with my daughter. This time of year the scenery is stunning and the air and temperature is perfect for outdoor cardio. Finding a spot where you can get out and truly enjoy the season is key. Whether it’s on a mountain, recreational trails nearby or simply going for a walk in a park, get outside, get moving and take in all the beauty fall has to offer.
Get Creative in Your Kitchen: I’m a lover of all things creative and food – now put these two things together and we’ve developed a wonderful relationship. There is something about the cooler weather that gets me even more excited to cook and create. Sometimes it’s coming up with an idea all on my own and other times it’s the inspiration of building on someone else’s idea. Of course, in the fall, pumpkin is the flave of rave. So far this fall I’ve created my own recipes for a homemade pumpkin soup, a pumpkin latte, pumpkin muffins and Pumpkin Quinoa Waffles that I shared earlier this month. All have been a success and I’m working on sharing these other recipes on my blog at some point. I’ve also made about 20 different chili’s in my crock pot, some of which I’ve come up with entirely on my own. Need something sweet, fun to do and not worry about calories for a change? Check out my Easy No Bake Halloween Treats that I posted on Hello Nature! These are fun, creative and easy and a lot of my friends said they can’t wait to replicate the idea and build on it with their kids! So get in your kitchen and get creating!
Decorate Your House, Inside and Out: Once September hits, I break out all my fall decorations. From haystacks, pumpkins and scarecrows outside to purple lights, pumpkin lights and fall-like knick-knacks in my house, I’m all about decorating. And my daughter loves checking out all my hard work. She get’s very excited when I turn on the pumpkin lights at night. So spice up your home with a little colorful fall decor!
Of course, there’s always the obvious fun fall activities like apple picking, pumpkin picking and snacking on candy corn! But if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, hopefully you found something here! Happy fall followers 🙂
