Growing up, Christmas was always my favorite time of year, and the Christmas tree was always my favorite part. Although, not much as changed because if I could, I would have a Christmas tree all year long!
I’m pretty certain my true love for Christmas started from the ripe age of six months. Even as an infant I found myself drawn to the lights, tinsel and ornaments that decorated the tree, and the perfectly packaged presents that sat underneath it. I’m sure most babies are, but even as a 30-something year old adult I still find myself wanting to nestle under the tree in awe of its magic and beauty.
I’ve always had specific preferences on holiday trim. As a kid, I loved the colorful lights. In fact, I kinda sorta hated the white ones – they’re just so everyday to me. There’s a white bulb in every lamp and light in my house, but color, that’s something different, color is Christmas to me. As a kid, I was never drawn to the trees that looked like they belonged in a catalog or in a fancy department store. I liked trees decorated with homemade ornaments, sparkly garland and colorful lights. They’re creative and have character. Not much has changed; although, I must admit that in my “old age” I have a new found love for white lights – they’re classic. My husband and I string our tree with both colored and white lights, and it’s set up so we can turn on just the colored, just the white, or both at the same time.
Aside from my love of the tree and its glorious trim, are traditions. Growing up I’d always go to a Christmas eve party at my great aunts house. It was my favorite party of the year. I remember exactly how the house was decorated every year, the food that was brought, the feeling I got as soon as I walked in and most importantly all the family and friends that attended. On the way home my dad always had my brother and I gazing out the car window in search of Santa and his sleigh in the night sky – we saw him every year ๐
I still go to that party, although, it has changed. It’s now at a cousins house the weekend before Christmas. Some of the food is the same, some is different, the holiday trim is different, some family has past and a lot of new family has joined. It’s a tradition that has gradually evolved over the years, and it’s still one of my favorite parties of the year. I’m excited and blessed to be taking my daughter to it for the first time. A new generation being welcomed into an old family tradition.
Traditions are special to me, they’re what make Christmas so special to me. I happen to have many this time of year, but don’t worry, I won’t go through them all or else you’ll be here all day ๐ But what excites me most about this Christmas is my daughter, and including her in both new and old traditions. I’ve been watching her reactions and excitement over the tree, the lights and the singing holiday Santa’s and Rudolph’s all season long – she is truly amazed. I’m in awe of her curiosity and I’m living vicariously through her childhood innocence. She has given the season a whole new exciting perspective and meaning to me.

She’s also pretty freakin’ awesome! And hilarious and adorable โโโ ๐
Like mother, like daughter…
Simply stated, there’s something about the holiday season that truly feels magical and special to me. It is my favorite time of year and my daughter is making that much more special and fun. So no matter what you celebrate, or your preference on trim and traditions, I’m sending you all warm wishes.
I hope the season has found you well and that the new year treats you right. See you all in 2015!
